about us
Who are we?
Leeds Oxfam Group (LOG) was founded about 10 years ago. We are all local volunteers (not paid) from a variety of backgrounds who care passionately about reducing poverty and eliminating injustice worldwide. We campaign in Yorkshire in collaboration with Oxfam U.K on issues related to reducing poverty internationally, promoting trade and economic justice and combating climate change.
Our Aims:
-
to inform ourselves about Oxfam’s work and campaigns but also other issues related to international development
-
to raise public awareness about the issues in the campaigns
-
to lobby policy makers and politicians about the issues
We also aim to make new friends and have a good time while doing the above.
What do we do ?
We regularly campaign at local community festivals across the city and can often be found taking our message to the centre of Leeds with our bright white stall on Briggate. You may have calculated your carbon footsteps with us last autumn.
Over the years we have campaigned on Make Poverty History, Climate Change, Access to Medicines, Make Trade Fair, Arms Control, to name just a few. Currently we are focusing on the Robin Hood Tax – a tiny tax on financial transactions which could raise billions to alieviate poverty both in the UK and across the world.
We encourage members to lobby their MPs on Oxfam campaigns and to write letters to MPs and politicians. Occasionally we have held letter writing sessions.
We fundraise with an annual sponsored walk raising money for a specific campaign, or to contribute to the wider national and international work of Oxfam.
We run training days or join other groups’ training days.
On the first Wednesday of each month we hold open meetings at the Civic Hall.
We organize talks to inform ourselves on various aspects of global justice or to find out about Oxfam & other projects in developing countries.
On the social side, we have an annual party, sometimes organize social evenings or go to see a film together.
Who can join the group?
Anyone who is interested.
